Pharmacokinetics

Week two of summer didactics is now complete! This week was focused on the use of pharmacokinetics in the dosing and therapeutic drug monitoring of drugs including aminoglycosides, vancomycin, phenytoin and digoxin. The group sessions provided a good opportunity to learn with and from other residents while working through the pharmacokinetics problems in class. We were challenged not only to provide safe and effective dosing but also to assess when the laboratory monitoring values may need to be questioned. This included everything from inappropriate sample collection to unexpected patient specific pharmacokinetic parameters. I am really looking forward to applying these skills on my DPC rotations! I will keep you updated when I have the chance to apply this knowledge.
